Expert Interview on 24sessions: Hans van Gent about Startups

Hans van Gent on 24sessions

Last week I got a small interview with the amazing people behind 24sessions. I love the concept behind this Dutch Startup. For those of you whom never heard about 24sessions:

24Sessions is a marketplace that connects people that need advice with experts who can give advice over live video. 24sessions allows you to search and book the right expert to receive valuable and real-time advice. (and in that sense a competitor of in my opinion, but it is doing an amazing job).

Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, a top-level manager or just someone who wants to learn about a new topic, with 24Sessions you can find the right expert and hire him per minute via live video.

For experts around the world, 24Sessions is a platform to help businesses, earn money and build reputation in a fun and efficient way. We believe that experts in any field of business can benefit from our platform. Whether you’re an accountant, country expert, entrepreneur, marketer, personal coach or lawyer.

They asked me some questions around startups and about the best advice I’ve ever received in my life. The interview can be found on the 24sessions blog. And if you want some one-on-one time with me, you can schedule a meeting here.

Selection Sharer plugin update (now includes Facebook sharing)

After the release of the Selection Sharer plugin in 2014, I’ve had some request about adding Facebook sharing integration into the WordPress plugin. It seemed not really that easy because you can’t really share a selection of text. However last week AlienSKP from Canada came up with an rather ingenious idea. By changing the title of the page via javascript to the selected text you can still sort of “share” a selection of text and have it being highlighted on Facebook.

After some debugging and stressing at SVN (I really do prefer Git over SVN), the updated code is now up and running in the Selection Sharer WordPress plugin. So go ahead, head over to that update section in your WordPress and start updating!

Putting my mentor cap on: StartupWeekend Stuttgart

It has been a while since I’ve last mentored at a StartupWeekend (last time was at StartupWeekend Cologne in January), so I was honoured that I got invited not just by StartupWeekend Cork, but also by the team of StartupWeekend Stuttgart to be a mentor in the same weekend. Sadly due to some logistics I could not fly over for my first trip ever to Ireland so I drove over to Stuttgart for the weekend and start helping out all the different teams in German (yes it has been a long time since I had to speak German, and apparently I still know enough to have some conversations).

Just after I arrived they did a small interview with me, which you can view below.

And the winner is… StartupBus Europe 2014

This years StartupBus Europe edition is over again, something you’ve been working for with an amazing team for months, happens in a couple of days and is over again before you know it. I want to give a big shout out to the entire team throughout Europe whom made this possible together with me, you all did an amazing job and without each and everyone of you we could not have made it.

Want to find out the winner of this years edition, have a look at the announcement done by Elias and myself on the stage of the Pioneers Festival.

Doing Customer Development (and stop wasting your time)

'Most startups fail due not to the failure of product development but due to the lack of customers’ - Steve Blank

Everybody can come up with the next BIG idea. The next big thing which is going to revolutionise the world! You see a problem and you think to yourself, that whatever it is you are going to build, will solve that problem for a lot of people. And is off course going to make you rich, filthy rich. The next Zuckerberg or Page, am I right?

You wake up one morning in this beautiful bubble and you start building straight away, as soon as your product or service is ready to be shared with the world all your customers will come flocking in and you are set for life!

In the end 9 out of 10 businesses fail, all because of one little world. Entrepreneurship is not risky….if you understand this word. However it is responsible for all of the risk in entrepreneurship.

Treasurehunting at the Chatillon Car Graveyard in Belgium

Last weekend I drove to Chatillon in the south part of Belgium close to the Luxembourg border. After having seen lots of beautiful pictures of the location myself on the internet I thought it was nice to investigate myself of how this magical forrest would look. It is said that the old-fashioned vehicles are to have been left in the wood near the village of Chatillon by U.S. soldiers who were stationed in southern Belgium during World War II. When the war ended, military troops were sent home, but could not afford to ship the cars they had bought and hid them in the forest. Since then, other cars have been added to the cemetery, many by soldiers stationed in the area after the war. If you have a look on Google Maps you actually still see a lot of these cars right there “hidden” in plain sight.

After arriving at the sight though it seems that we were just a little bit too late: DSC_0192 (more…)
